Why do I need to maintain my vehicle's A/C system?

Summertime in Turlock, Ca, means two things. Extreme summer temperatures and dry & dusty conditions. Combine those two, and you have a "1-2 punch" to your vehicle's air conditioning system. Living here, it is more important than ever to service your A/C system regularly!

Your A/C system consists of physical machinery and electrical engineering. They work in concert to provide you a refuge from the punishing Central Valley heat. The compressor, radiator, freon, fans, and more all need to work for you to stay cool.

My A/C system makes a noise when I turn it on

Have you ever noticed that when you turn on your A/C system, you hear a noise under your vehicle's hood? Or, maybe it sounds as if something has kicked into gear sharply, grinds, makes knocking noises, or other sounds?

It is normal for your A/C system to make small sounds when it first engages, and you can hear the compressor working. However, it is not normal to hear knocking and other loud, abrasive sounds. If you do, your A/C system definitely needs service.

My A/C system smells weird, and debris comes through the vents

If it has been a while since you changed your cabin air filter or had your A/C system serviced, you might notice a strange musky smell coming from the A/C vents. Sometimes, the smell can be quite bad or even cause allergic reactions; this can be due to mold buildup in the air conditioning system.

If you noticed a strange smell, it is definitely time to change your cabin air filter and consider having your system serviced to purge it of mold and other bacteria. You may also notice debris coming through the vents, getting into your eyes and mouth. In this case, you want to change your cabin air filter immediately.
