The 3 Most Overlooked Vehicle Fluids You Should Check Regularly

When it comes to vehicle maintenance, most people think of things like oil changes and tire rotations. While these are important, there are three other vehicle fluids that often get overlooked: coolant, windshield washer fluid for safety, and brake fluid. Here's what you need to know about each one of them.

Coolant

Coolant is a mixture of water and antifreeze used to keep the engine from overheating. Coolant should be regularly checked and exchanged every two years or 24,000 miles (whichever comes first). If your coolant level is low or the coolant looks cloudy or rusty, it's time for an exchange. Make sure you use the right type of coolant for your specific car make/model—check your owner's manual if you're unsure.

Windshield Washer Fluid

Windshield washer fluid is essential for keeping your windshield clean while driving. Without it, dirt and debris can quickly build up on your windshield, making visibility difficult. Check the reservoir at least twice a year to make sure you have enough fluid; add more if needed. It's also important to use the correct type of washer fluid for your vehicle; check with an auto repair shop if you need help selecting the right kind.

Windshield washer fluid might seem like something you can skip until you really need it. Finding yourself stuck in a situation that impairs your ability to see is something you want to avoid!

Brake Fluid

Brakes are arguably the most important part of any vehicle—and brake fluid is what keeps them functioning properly. Brake fluid should be checked once a year or every 12,000 miles (whichever comes first). If it looks dirty or has a burnt smell, it needs to changing to keep the brakes working optimally and ensure safe driving conditions.

As always, make sure you use the right type of brake fluid for your specific car make/model—consult a professional if necessary!
